The local OBC cyclo-cross series started today with a bang. 170 riders lined up for a fast race. The race course was a long loop that traversed mostly grass with some pavement thrown in. One run-up. Six barriers. Lots of tight turns. Definitely a fun way to start the season.
Due to the large volume of racers the start was a bit chaotic. Some like me definitely over-started. That's okay since my race at Nationals will only be 30 minutes long. But in a 60 minute race, over-starting can be rather draining.
Overall I'm content with the race. I rode hard. Technically it was an okay race. There are areas where I know I should have been riding better. I should have been sprinting out everything. My uphill dismount was rather weak. And I should have attacked the slowish hard sections. But, fitness-wise I felt really good. Especially considering this lingering cold. I felt I rode some sections of the course very well. Particularly the corners. I am much improved at reading the correct line and I was able to pass people in these areas.
Perhaps the most difficult component for me today was the mental game. My head was fighting my legs and lungs. I really almost convinced myself to quit. But I didn't. But those voices in my head got pretty loud at times. I suppose this is the fatigue talking. The body doesn't want to go hard so the brain kicks and looks for a way out.
The bike felt super good. The skinsuit was awesome. It was so cool to be racing in our new stealth black skinsuits. The funny thing was that some people didn't recognize because of the new suit and team. Well, now they'll now Stevens Cross - we wear black.
The cheering was awesome. The cow bells were cool. A very fun day. I'm happy with my race. I know what I need to work on and where I could have used my energy more wisely. This is what I'm looking for in these early races. The performance was good the outcome was good. Next time I want the performance to better and the outcome will follow as well.
Huge thanks to Jenny for the Coke after the race. It really helped me. I was feeling a bit rough for a while.
Next up on the racing calendar is a Quebec double-header. Fun.
